I think there’s a lot of truth in that statement. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Think about it... What’s comfortable about putting yourself out there and asking for a job promotion? What’s comfortable about asking someone to use your company’s product or service? What’s comfortable about reaching out and making contact with someone you don’t really know that well initially? What's comfortable about taking the first step towards learning a new skill? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not a whole lot is there? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course this is not all bad news. For one thing if you’re willing to be uncomfortable just a bit from time to time you’re going to put yourself in a much better position to take advantage of a lot of the opportunities that are all around us -- even if we don't always notice them. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In most cases the reason that most folks don’t achieve greater levels of success is because they either don’t recognize the opportunity in the first place, or they lack the ability to move past their self-imposed comfort zones and do the uncomfortable actions necessary to get on with finding success in their given endeavor. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Keep this in mind - if you always feel comfortable it is likely that you're not giving your success the full chance it deserves. If you are always comfortable, you may be limiting yourself in ways you may not even fully realize. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Action Step: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Develop the mindset to try new things - always be on the lookout for new opportunities and be willing to reach beyond what you think you are capable of and go for it. If we believe this to be true doesn't it stand to reason that we would do well to take an active role as to what we allow to become our most dominant thoughts? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hopefully you would agree that we would all benefit greatly by choosing to recount the daily achievements we experience. No matter how small or insignificant you may view them at the moment each should be acknowledged -- and framed in our mind as they are -- successes. If we neglect to do so there's a chance that we will end up focusing on the occurrences of our day that don't help to build our own self-esteem. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There's great personal power that comes from celebrating both our larger achievements as well as the small successes that we experience ongoing in our lives. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The reality is that you and I have the choice to allow ourselves to gravitate towards thinking about the negative things we have experienced, or we can choose to take a more pro-active approach where we make the choice to re-live in our mind the positive accomplishments of the day. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It really does get right down to making the choice to see things from a half full versus half empty mentality. Make the choice to see the positives and that’s exactly what you’ll notice more of. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Action exercise: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the end of each day just before heading to sleep take a moment to write down several successes from the day. Remember that they don't have to be monumental to count as a success. Anything from meeting a new person to calling on a new client and just about anything in between qualifies as a worthy achievement. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After you have written down your daily list -- read over what you've written and each time you do so close your eyes for a moment and try to experience the positive feelings associated with your given accomplishments. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By following this idea we can actually control what we choose to focus in on. While we don't always have complete control over what happens to us, we do have the choice to focus our minds on (and thus give power to) those things that are most likely to get us on a positive path. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My hope is that the ideas shared above help you to better take control of your most dominant thoughts. Here is how important they are: If you were a city planner, you'd need problem-solving and decision-making skills. You'd need to create a vision for the future and plan for its realization. If you were a clergy person, you'd need listening skills, empathy and strong values. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To be an effective teacher, you'd have to communicate clearly and understand your students, especially how they learn. If you were a mediator, you'd need skills in conflict resolution, compromise and working toward agreement without blaming. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As a TV talk show host, you'd need interview skills and a genuine interest in people. To be an enlightened employer, you'd need to appreciate, encourage and support your employees. Working in the area of cross-cultural relations would require considerable skill in power sharing and managing diversity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To create a successful marriage, you need all those skills – and more. You may not need any one of those skills as regularly or as intensively as you would if that skill were central to a particular occupation. But they would all be important, in the sense that the absence of any one could cause serious trouble sometime in the life of the relationship and the presence of them would greatly enrich your relationship.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Few people get married mindful of the relationship skills that success is going to require of them. Getting married is about friendship, security, the promise of regular good sex, being with the one you expect to love you as you've always wanted to be loved – any number of reasons. Seldom, however, is getting married about learning new skills and becoming a better person through their use.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Typically, if you were an engineer on a new job, by virtue of your training you would have a pretty clear idea of what doing your engineering job would demand. On the other hand, because you almost certainly had no prior training in the skills of marriage, you would not be thinking skills at all when you became someone's spouse and took on the "marriage job." On the other hand, you would probably discover those skills soon enough by their absence when you needed them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pick almost any couple in trouble. Find the area of their relationship where they regularly collide, where they anger, hurt and disappoint each other. Poke around a bit. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Underneath all their noise and thrashing about, you will almost certainly discover the absence of some skill – perhaps the ability to hear each other accurately or to stay focused during a discussion – that is the primary cause of this couple conflict – skills that, had they been present at the right moment, would have made the couple's distress unnecessary.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Because most couples do not think skills when problems arise, they tend to demonize each other instead. When Sally and Ted fight, Ted doesn't see the problem as a lack of skill - they don't know how to explore disagreements without insulting each other. In his view, Sally is an angry and unreasonable person, and he is the innocent victim who made a big mistake in marrying her.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How much better it would be if Ted and Sally – and all the other couples who antagonize and disappoint each other – could think deficient skills instead of deficient people. Taking the position that we're two decent and well-meaning people confronting a problem or situation that challenges us beyond our current ability – can, in itself, make all sorts of destructive labeling and blaming unnecessary. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Learning the skills that relationship succeed require, an often pleasant and enriching experience in itself, can have a strongly positive effect on the way partners see each other and, consequently, on their relationship. Hearing the elders stories of his ancestors valour during the wars of resistance in defence of their fatherland, he dreamed also of making his own contribution to the freedom struggle of his people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After receiving a primary education at a local mission school, Nelson Mandela was sent to Healdtown, a Wesleyan secondary school of some repute where he matriculated. He then enrolled at the University College of Fort Hare for the Bachelor of Arts Degree where he was elected onto the Student's Representative Council. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He was suspended from college for joining in a protest boycott.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1942&lt;br /&gt;After his suspension he went to Johannesburg where he completed his BA by correspondence, took articles of clerkship and commenced study for his LLB. He entered politics in earnest while studying in Johannesburg by joining the African National Congress in 1942. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the height of the Second World War a small group of young Africans, banded together. These young people set themselves the formidable task of transforming the ANC into a mass movement, deriving its strength and motivation from the unlettered millions of working people in the towns and countryside, the peasants in the rural areas and the professionals. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1942&lt;br /&gt;Their chief contention was that the political tactics of the old guard' leadership of the ANC, reared in the tradition of constitutionalism and polite petitioning of the government of the day, were proving inadequate to the tasks of national emancipation. In opposition to the old guard', Lembede and his colleagues espoused a radical African Nationalism grounded in the principle of national self-determination. In September 1944 they came together to found the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1947&lt;br /&gt;Mandela soon impressed his peers by his disciplined work and consistent effort and was elected to the Secretaryship of the Youth League in 1947. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1949 &lt;br /&gt;The Programme of Action, inspired by the Youth League, which advocated the weapons of boycott, strike, civil disobedience and non-co-operation was accepted as official ANC policy. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1952&lt;br /&gt;Mandela himself was elected to the NEC at national conference. The ANCYL programme aimed at the attainment of full citizenship, direct parliamentary representation for all South Africans. Mandela and his co-accused had consistently advised their followers to adopt a peaceful course of action and to avoid all violence. For his part in the Defiance Campaign, Mandela was convicted of contravening the Suppression of Communism Act and given a suspended prison sentence. Shortly after the campaign ended, he was also prohibited from attending gatherings and confined to Johannesburg for six months. During this period of restrictions, Mandela wrote the attorneys admission examination and was admitted to the profession. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During the fifties, Mandela was the victim of various forms of repression. He was banned, arrested and imprisoned. For much of the latter half of the decade, he was one of the accused in the mammoth Treason Trial, at great cost to his legal practice and his political work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1961&lt;br /&gt;With the ANC now illegal the leadership picked up the threads from its underground headquarters. Nelson Mandela emerged at this time as the leading figure in this new phase of struggle. Under the ANC's inspiration, 1,400 delegates came together at an All-in African Conference in Pietermaritzburg during March 1961. Mandela was the keynote speaker. In an electrifying address he challenged the apartheid regime to convene a national convention, representative of all South Africans to thrash out a new constitution based on democratic principles. Failure to comply, he warned, would compel the majority (Blacks) to observe the forthcoming inauguration of the Republic with a mass general strike. He immediately went underground to lead the campaign. Although fewer answered the call than Mandela had hoped, it attracted considerable support throughout the country. The government responded with the largest military mobilisation since the war, and the Republic was born in an atmosphere of fear and apprehension. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Forced to live apart from his family, moving from place to place to evade detection by the government s ubiquitous informers and police spies, Mandela had to adopt a number of disguises. Sometimes dressed as a common labourer, at other times as a chauffeur, his successful evasion of the police earned him the title of the Black Pimpernel. It was during this time that he, together with other leaders of the ANC constituted a new specialised section of the liberation movement, Umkhonto we Sizwe, as an armed nucleus with a view to preparing for armed struggle. At the Rivonia trial, Mandela explained : "At the beginning of June 1961, after long and anxious assessment of the South African situation, I and some colleagues came to the conclusion that as violence in this country was inevitable, it would be wrong and unrealistic for African leaders to continue preaching peace and non-violence at a time when the government met our peaceful demands with force. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was only when all else had failed, when all channels of peaceful protest had been barred to us, that the decision was made to embark on violent forms of political struggle, and to form Umkhonto we Sizwe...the Government had left us no other choice." &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 1961 Umkhonto we Sizwe was formed, with Mandela as its commander-in-chief. In 1962 Mandela left the country unlawfully and travelled abroad for several months. In Ethiopia he addressed the Conference of the Pan African Freedom Movement of East and Central Africa, and was warmly received by senior political leaders in several countries. During this trip Mandela, anticipating an intensification of the armed struggle, began to arrange guerrilla training for members of Umkhonto we Sizwe. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1962&lt;br /&gt;Not long after his return to South Africa Mandela was arrested and charged with illegal exit from the country, and incitement to strike. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since he considered the prosecution a trial of the aspirations of the African people, Mandela decided to conduct his own defence. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He applied for the recusal of the magistrate, on the ground that in such a prosecution a judiciary controlled entirely by whites was an interested party and therefore could not be impartial, and on the ground that he owed no duty to obey the laws of a white parliament, in which he was not represented. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mandela prefaced this challenge with the affirmation: "I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man." &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mandela was convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment. While serving his sentence he was charged, in the Rivonia Trial, with sabotage. Mandela s statements in court during these trials are classics in the history of the resistance to apartheid, and they have been an inspiration to all who have opposed it. His statement from the dock in the Rivonia Trial ends with these words: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment and started his prison years in the notorious Robben Island Prison, a maximum security prison on a small island 7Km off the coast near Cape Town&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1980&lt;br /&gt;Mandela rejected an offer of release on condition that he renounce violence. Prisoners cannot enter into contracts. Only free men can negotiate, he said. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1984&lt;br /&gt;In April 1984 he was transferred to Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1988&lt;br /&gt;1988 he was moved the Victor Verster Prison near Paarl.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1990&lt;br /&gt;Released on 11 February 1990, Mandela plunged wholeheartedly into his life's work, striving to attain the goals he and others had set out almost four decades earlier. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity. But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition. In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the Negro. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges. But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. we must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with &lt;br /&gt;our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" we can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. This is our hope. This is the faith with which I return to the South. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring." And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania! Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado! Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California! But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia! Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee! Let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill of Mississippi. Some say that a leader’s most important work is constructing a vision .This is commonly understood to mean that a leader comes up with an image of an ideal future condition .The leader then explains this vision to followers and convinces followers to do what is necessary to attain the vision. This is not my view of vision;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THE FUTURE IS NOT A RESULT OF CHOICES AMONG ALTERNATIVE PATHS OFFERED BY THE PRESENT BUT A PLACE THAT IS CREATED .CREATED FIRST IN MIND AND WILL, CREATED NEXT IN ACTIVITY.THE PATHS TO IT ARE NOT FOUND BUT MADE, AND THE ACTIVITY OF MAKING THEM CHANGES BOTH THE MAKER AND THE DESTINATION.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vision is to visualize, to see something that others don’t see and to create it. Vision is like seeing the invisible and making it visible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Infact, the “vision” is less important than the act of “visioning” that is, the process of constructing a vision. The process of developing a vision doesn’t mean dreaming.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Predicting the future is notoriously difficult. But visioning is not about predicting the future we will someday see. It is a step in constructing the future we want. This requires thinking and thinking hard.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Faith in faith!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I personally believe in the act of having faith in faith. Your faith should be in God, in your self, in your dream, not in your friends or your folks. I guess this is too big and too deep for some of us to comprehend “I am not saying you should not be FRIENDLY ” but you need to have faith in faith.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most times the vision does not come to fruition when we want it to. Remember that your vision is like a seed and a seed must undergo the process of death before ressurection and this is not magical.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your vision is for an appointed time. The wisest man confirms this in his book when he said “there is a time and purpose for everything under the sun”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is for an appointed time and it does not have to look like it is going to come to fruition, just stay glued to it and keep pushing like a pregnant woman awaiting the cry of her new born baby.
